HELIO COMPASS

Interplanetary Garden

HIROKI OKANO
This composition was crafted through the collaboration between HELIO COMPASS and Hiroki Okano, Japan’s leading ambient music composer. In this 52-minute musical piece, the one-year movement of the entire solar system is likened to a grand musical score and the year-long revolution of planet Earth is represented. This unconventional idea has taken shape as this impeccable rendition. The whole composition features an assortment of sounds every few seconds. Each and every sound perfectly coincides with this year’s astronomical events, such as the 24 seasonal divisions and the moon phases, as well as major seasonal points on calendar. Rendering the representation of one Earth year using sounds is a completely novel attempt to convey the concept of extensive time and space that resides in music. It seems the same as a Zen monk designing a Zen garden by creating a microcosmic image of the universe in a very small space.
Incidentally, Hiroki Okano was invited to the grand festival of Arunachala Hill, a holy place in India, and made a pilgrimage there in the midst of production. He visited several thousands-of-years-old temples to dedicate his musical performances. Some of these temples are called Navagraha temples, or also dubbed “the nine planet temples.” These separate temples enshrine nine deities respectively, each of which symbolizes major celestial bodies in the solar system. From ancient times in India, a fascination with the universe led people to delve into other studies such as mathematics, languages, and music. This spirit also built the fundamental wisdom of their lives, just as their religions did. During the festive highlight when sacred sticks were burnt and people offered prayers, Hiroki experienced the instant the whole area of Arunachala Hill was plunged into darkness due to a power outage. In that moment when the bustle vanished and complete silence embraced the entire town, he set up his equipment and tried recording. The sound of thunder that he miraculously captured at that time impressively heralds the season in this composition.
Varied ambient sounds, including resonance of life on Earth, sounds of flowing water and whispering wind, harmonize with the musical passages. Take your time to unwind, simply listen to the music and sense the vibrations of Earth, visualizing the solar system, just as if you were sitting on the floor in front of a Zen garden.

HELIO COMPASS is a circular calendar, while simultaneously acting as a time- space map of the solar system. Set with the Sun as the center of the calendar, HELIO COMPASS represents each orbit of the nine planets on a scale of 1:1,000,000,000,000. Through the observation of the one-year revolution of Earth, we can locate our current position in the solar system. HELIO COMPASS is an unconventional style of calendar, starting on the day of the Vernal Equinox, which provides an innovative perspective that can be shared with all life on Earth.
